Funding Priorities

A minimum of 25 percent of the net income from each domestic Affiliate Race supports the national Komen for the Cure Grant Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific conferences around the world.

Up to 75 percent of the net income from each domestic Affiliate Race stays in the local community to fund breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment projects.

Brief Summary of Priorities

Through a community needs assessment  we have identified the funding priorities listed below.

  • Priority 1: Increase inclusion and cultural competency to ensure every individual has sustained access to the continuum of care from screening to post-treatment.
    • Objective 1.1: Within two years, promote outreach and increase services to at least four additional culturally-, linguistically- or geographically-isolated communities.
    • Objective 1.2: Expand access to screening for medically underserved women by increasing the number of organizations that develop effective strategies addressing barriers to the continuum of care (i.e., transportation to services, child care, language and cultural issues).
    • Objective 1.3: In current and expanded counties, demonstrate an improved percentage of early detection rates among medically underserved women per Colorado Central Cancer Registry data.
    • Objective 1.4: Within two years, increase by one percent the number of people receiving financial assistance and/or services for non-medical treatment related costs.
    • Objective 1.5: Within two years, increase by five the number of organizations that provide education encouraging successful survivorship and good post-treatment health practices.
  • Priority 2: Encourage patient navigation to efficiently guide women throughout the continuum of care.
    • Objective 2.1: Within the next two years, identify and partner with at least five navigator programs throughout the current and expanded service areas.
    • Objective 2.2: Encourage development of programs that implement the quality of life model for survivorship.
  • Priority 3: Expand the Affiliate’s service areas to better serve individuals throughout Southeastern Colorado.
    • Objective 3.1: Within the next 12 months, build partnerships with leaders and organizations in the four county clusters identified in the affiliate expansion plan.
    • Objective 3.2:  Within two years, successfully complete a one-day conference in each of the four county clusters.
    • Objective 3.3: Within two years, form four Southeastern Colorado Komen steering teams in the expansion area.

Community Profile for Download

Affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® complete a community assessment every two years to understand the state of breast health and cancer care services in their service areas. The purpose of the assessment is to ensure their work is collaborative, targeted and nonduplicative and is intended to establish focused education and grantmaking activities. Three Colorado Affiliates—Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, Southeastern Colorado Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and Aspen Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®—collaborated on this assessment to create a statewide profile encompassing their service areas and potential counties for expansion. By working together, the Affiliates created statewide priorities to guide decisions at the Affiliate level in order to create a common vision and goal with which to serve women and men in Colorado. This shared vision creates the opportunity to strengthen networks, break down barriers and increase access to breast health and cancer care services for all in Colorado.
