Grants

Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is a grant-making organization dedicated to saving lives and ending breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. The Southeastern Colorado Affiliate is one of a network of 120 Affiliates, in cities and communities across the globe, that support this vision.

We award grants to not-for-profit organizations that provide breast health/breast cancer screening, treatment support, and education to the medically uninsured, underinsured, or at-risk populations in our 3-county area (El Paso, Pueblo, Teller.) Our local Affiliate spends 75% of the net proceeds from fund raising within the 3-county area in addition to sending 25% to Komen National to support their national research grants.

Since 1995 the Southeastern Colorado Affiliate has awarded over $5 million in grants to breast cancer projects in El Paso, Pueblo, and Teller counties. An additional $1 million has been donated to Komen National to support scientific research to discover a cure for breast cancer

In order to ensure these funds have the greatest impact, our Affiliate conducts a bi-annual community needs assessment to establish priorities for funding that address identified breast health needs of our community. Using a grant-making process modeled after Susan G. Komen for the Cure's Award and Research Grant Program, a request for proposals is publicized and an objective grant review process selects the most qualified applications for funding. Community representatives, local breast health professionals, and breast cancer survivors evaluate the merit of all proposals to determine which ones best serve our community's identified needs.
